our children deserve
By Brittany Gail Thomas, Esq.
It’s Black History Month and as we celebrate the great strides of many in the Black community, we also must address the work that needs to be done.
We are not surprised.
We are not surprised to hear the cries or see the footage of a 9 year-old Black girl in Rochester, NY.
We’re not surprised that she was subjected to mace in her face and handcuffs on her risk.
We’re not surprised that she called out for her father and not even that spared her distress.
Our ancestors faced water hoses, billy clubs, acid, and attack dogs.
More recently, Asian children have been mocked, teased, and run away from because of the “China virus.”
Hijabs have been snatched off of the heads of our Muslim children by their teachers.
Black and brown students have been handcuffed and dragged through school hallways at astronomical numbers.
We are clear that this has happened before.
What we do not want to be clear about is the possibility or it happening again.
Our children deserve to be safe.
Our children deserve to be protected.
Our children deserve justice.
Until this nation and our world judges every child and human being “not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” we will continue to fight for and demand it.
